No worries mate – also made some additional notes below. Dont worry about being more than you need. It looks like the entry for the USB mixers is the XENYX 1204USB.

Just a point of note: be careful with the models. The XENYX 1204USB DOES NOT HAVE FX BUILT IN.

The FX model – so the same model but with the FX built in is the XENYX X1204USB – note…[Read more]

Kevin, Had a look at the specs for the BEHRINGER XENYX 1204 USB and they look great. Stand outs for me are the features and it is what I would expect as far as yes it has everything you would want and more. I love the sliders. They give a really smooth transition when needed and have a great feel. There’s also the built in FX – not that I used it…[Read more]

Hey Kevin thank for the question. I don’t have experience with the mixer that your referring to but I do have experience with an older anaologue version the Beringer 1000FX (pretty sure that’s the right model number) – nope it was not the most expensive – pretty cheap in fact and I used it for 6 years without missing a beat. In fact it is…[Read more]

@Allen G’day – James spoke to me a few days ago regarding your problem. I too came across a similar issue although it cam about differently. In my situation only one side of the conversation was recording. Essentially I think that the issue is one and the same and it has to do with the settings in SoundForge.

What I can tell you is that all your…[Read more]

    • Hi Dave,

Thanks so much for your help. I am at my office now but I will give it a go as soon as I get home. I had the audio up all the way so I could lower the gain more. All of our settings came about through trial and error and I honestly can’t remember why exactly I found that set up best for us. Do you think it would be better to turn…[Read more]

      • Hi Allen, this episode of Podcasters’ Emporium explains the relationship between gain and levels and will help you determine how to get the best combination to remove background noise and get your levels up. http://podcastersemporium.com/?p=56

I will also take a snapshot of my mixer levels, which may help guide you. I’ll post it up here. …[Read more]

      • Allen the other thing Dave and I have been discussing is perhaps Pamela is interfering with the mix that’s coming into your mixer. One of the things you definitely try (if Dave’s suggestion doesn’t completely fix the problem) is disabling or removing Pamela from Skype.

        • Thanks, James. I will listen to that episode again. I have never been thrilled with our sound but I remember that episode helped us get much closer to where we want to be.

I checked out SoundForge when I got home last night and the settings for the blue numbered boxes were already set at “Main Mix in Left/Main Mix in Right” so it doesn’t…[Read more]

          • I can’t tell you the exact steps because Skype interfaces keep changing, but I can tell you how it works. Pamela is a plugin that requires permission to connect to Skype. You should be able to disallow this plugin (check your settings). In short you should be able to disconnect Pamela from Skype without uninstalling the software.

            • Actually I tried playing with that a bit when trying to figure this out last week and Pamela was already disconnected (so I’m not sure how we were even able to use it to record in the first place now that I think about it). But that did get me thinking, could it be that a driver for the mixer needs to be given permission to connect with Skype? …[Read more]

        • One more thing, I just uninstalled Pamela and that didn’t seem to do the trick. This is proving to be more tricky than I was hoping for. I thought it would end up being one small setting I missed somewhere along the way. Oh well, still might me. Thanks again.

          • Sounds like we need to look at isolating whether this is a hardware or a software issue. The easiest way to do this would be to record using different software and see if the problem persists. Why don’t you try downloading a trial version of WavePad from NCH Software and see if the problem persists. If it doesn’t, then we know we need to be…[Read more]

  • Hey Chris; there are no actual recording options from within a Google Hangout. James is referring to recording the audio locally on our computer using our USB mixers. I know others who have tried software solutions and had issues with loops and feedback. Using a USB mixer eliminates the need to use software to record [...]
